Description
Exceptional antique Baule chief’s chair from Ivory Coast. Rare and sculptural ceremonial seat hand-carved from dense hardwood, dating to the late 19th to early 20th century. Traditionally reserved for respected chiefs, elders, or high-ranking individuals, chairs of this form symbolized authority, lineage, and social prestige within Baule culture. The architectural silhouette features an elevated crest rail with carved terminals, pierced spindle-form side panels, and finely incised geometric detailing across the seat and frame. Small brass embellishments accent the upper corners and crest, reflecting the historic value placed on imported metalwork throughout West African court arts. Beautiful age and wear are visible throughout, including a rich dark patina, softened edges, shrinkage cracks, oxidation to the brass, and evidence of long-term ceremonial use. Both functional and deeply symbolic, this chair stands today as an important example of African tribal artistry and serves equally well as a collectible object, sculptural statement piece, or historically significant decorative work. Seat height is 17".
