Description
Antique early Songye female figure from the Democratic Republic of Congo, hand-carved from a single piece of hardwood and exhibiting strong Kifwebe-inspired facial scarification and geometric abstraction. The elongated head is richly incised with rhythmic linear carvings, while the simplified body reflects the powerful sculptural language for which Songye artists are renowned. The figure's gently rounded abdomen may be an intentional reference to fertility and motherhood, themes frequently celebrated in Central African sculpture. This subtle emphasis on the female form symbolizes abundance, lineage, and the continuation of community and family. Deep age cracks, surface wear, erosion, and a dark, naturally developed patina attest to the figure’s age and history of use. Originally created within a cultural context connected to ancestral, protective, or spiritual traditions, the figure is now mounted on a custom iron stand for display.
