Bedu plank masks are among the largest masks in African art. The form of the Bedu mask represents a mythical buffalo like animal that plays an important roll in the new years celebration for the Senufo people of the north west Ghana region. The Bedu celebrations are focused on the winter solstice celebrations called Zaurau where these types of masks are worn by males with the horn images and females incorporate a large disk shaped image. Typically geometrical patterns decorate these masks and have holes for wearer to see out. Despite the large size these are made of lighter wood and can be easily mounted on the wall.
