Ngbaka Banya Figure

This is a special and rare piece from the Ngbaka Banyan people of DRC. With cowry shell eyes and the traditional grooves down the nose and forehead that are typical of Ngbaka men scarification design. The concave eye area and triangle nose are also typical features of this tribal group's figure carvings. This size figure is generally placed on altars inside the house and fulfill a protective role. The reddish pigment applied to the wood is also believed to bring good fortune. This figure has been dated to early 1900 -1940 and has previously been in a European collection and now in Los Angeles for the past 15 years.
