Description
Antique Mbole copper currency anklet from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Hand-forged from substantial copper, a material historically valued throughout Central Africa as both a symbol of wealth and a medium of exchange. Pieces such as this functioned as prestige currency and were used in important social transactions including bridewealth exchanges, ceremonial gifts, and displays of status within the community. The striking crescent form was designed to be worn around the ankle or lower leg, while its heavy weight and copper content reflected tangible value. Features a beautifully weathered surface of muted olive-bronze, pewter, and earthy taupe patination acquired through age and use. Displayed on custom black iron stand.
