Authentic and rare Toma Landai passport mask mounted on iron display stand. Beautiful hand worked brass with great historic symbolism. The Toma people live in the rain forest in the Guinea-Liberia-Sierra Leone border. The Landai mask represents the legendary ancestor/spirit of the forest who would appear when it was time for youths to be initiated into the men’s Poro Society. During the initiation the spirit of Landai was responsible for devouring boys and rebirthing them at men. Wonderful piece for collection and display.
