Description
These sculptural carved architectural posts originate from traditional compounds in Northern Nigeria, where they once served as structural supports for veranda and courtyard roofs. Hand-carved from dense hardwood by Nupe and Hausa artisans, each post is composed of stacked geometric elements—faceted cylinders, carved bands, and diamond-shaped openings—creating a rhythmic vertical composition that reflects both architectural function and symbolic ornamentation. In many Northern Nigerian traditions, carved architectural elements were believed to offer protection to the household and to signify stability, lineage, and continuity. The repeating stacked forms are often interpreted as symbolic layers of the household or community, while the diamond-shaped openings and carved facets reference passages, thresholds, and the movement between interior and exterior space—important ideas in compound architecture. The surfaces retain the marks of hand tools and a deep, time-darkened patina developed through decades of age and use. Their bold geometry and quiet monumentality are appreciated as sculptural objects that bridge vernacular architecture and modernist form. Each is unique in carving and proportion and is presented on a custom iron stand for display indoors or out. Sold individually. Each varies in size and shape around 8" diameter. Height of each also ranges from 6.5'-8' tall.
