Description
Original button-adorned sculptural hat referencing the ceremonial traditions of the Lega people of the Democratic Republic of Congo, whose artistic forms are closely tied to the teachings of the Bwami Society—a graded system emphasizing wisdom, moral development, and earned status within the community. The domed crown, surmounted by a carved wooden crest, suggests elevation and leadership, while the dense mosaic of varied buttons creates a rhythmic, textural surface that may symbolically reference cycles of knowledge and interconnectedness. Hats such as this were meant to identify the wearer as a member and honored elder and also would signify a bond with one's ancestors. Circa mid-late 1900's. Mounted on black iron stand for display.
