Rare Special Baule Wood Blade Handle

Rare Special Baule Wood Blade Handle

Product SKU: AFR331RB4

Description
A finely carved wooden blade handle from the Baule people of Côte d’Ivoire, dating to the late 19th–early 20th century, originally fitted to an iron ceremonial sword or prestige knife. The sculptural handle is distinguished by a striking anthropomorphic pommel—an idealized human face emerging from a rounded sphere—reflecting Baule concepts of harmony, spiritual presence, and dignified beauty. The entire surface is intricately engraved with dense geometric motifs including crosshatching, zigzags, and diamond grids, patterns that echo traditional textiles and scarification designs associated with identity, lineage, and social status. The elegant double-gourd form, combined with the unusually rich all-over carving, suggests the handle was created for a prestige weapon carried by a respected individual rather than for utilitarian use. The surviving iron tang and deep, naturally developed patina offer strong age cues consistent with authentic late 19th to early 20th century examples. Now presented on a custom iron display stand, the piece stands as a compelling example of Baule artistry, where functional weaponry was transformed into a sculptural expression of authority, craftsmanship, and cultural symbolism.
