Description
Vintage carved wood original Nupe grain door. A Nupe grain door is a traditional carved wooden door made by the Nupe people of central Nigeria. These doors originally protected granaries (storehouses for grain) and later became highly valued as architectural art pieces. They were often commissioned by wealthy families of leaders of communities, and symbolized wealth, status, and protection. Grain itself represented prosperity, so these doors also became such symbolic guardians. The images of animals and reptile figures together with geometric patterns are symbolic in the culture of the Nupe adding importance in strength and meaning to the door protecting the food storage behind. Today, these unique hand carved pieces are used as a historic story piece and displayed as art in eclectic collections.
