Description
This impressive antique carved wood head of Quan Yin (Guanyin), the revered Buddhist bodhisattva of compassion and mercy, dates to the late Qing Dynasty or early Republic period, circa 1880–1930. Expertly hand-carved from solid wood, the sculpture features a serene closed-eye expression beneath an ornate crown, retaining remarkable traces of its original gilded and polychrome lacquer surface in softly weathered gold and faded mauve tones. Deeply incised hair detailing, elongated ears symbolizing wisdom and spiritual enlightenment, and beautifully aged craquelure throughout the surface all contribute to its powerful sculptural presence and authenticity. Extensive natural age wear, oxidation, shrinkage cracking, and visible insect loss to the underside further speak to the piece’s genuine antiquity and long devotional history. Originally likely part of a larger temple figure, shrine carving, or Buddhist altar sculpture, the head would have served as an object of meditation, protection, and spiritual reverence within a sacred interior. Today, mounted as a standalone artwork, it functions as an extraordinary decorative statement piece blending spiritual symbolism, architectural scale, and centuries of atmospheric patina.
