Wood carved fetish figures adorned with nails. These statues were thought to have magical powers. Common to many tribes was the belief that the fetishes acquired power through ritualistic ceremonies and the hollowed out stomach which holds special substances. The mirror is to reflect back evil or to blind hostile spirits and protect the tribe. From Zaire. Circa early 1900's. Sold as a pair.
